Welcome to our class information page.
There are three different levels of drama at Carl Sandburg Middle School: beginning, advanced, and technical theatre.
In Beginning, students get basic foundations of stagecraft; basic movement technique, vocal technique, basic blocking, basic script analysis, character development, and memorization technique. We work on building confidence on stage through solo and two person performances in speeches, pantomimes, monologues, tableaus, and improvs. This is a semester long class.
In Advanced, students explore more advanced techniques in acting and stagecraft, technical theatre, theatre history (specifically Shakespeare and musical theatre), playwriting (where we do a reader's theatre production of their plays or monologues), directing, and audition technique, building on the skills they learned in beginning theatre. This is a year long class.
In Technical Theatre, students will get a basic introduction to technical theatre (the backstage elements of a theatrical production). We will explore terminology, principles of design, and the people involved in theatrical productions behind the scenes. This year students applied their tech skills through the Khan Academy/Disney Imagineering in a Box Project. This class is meant to prepare students for Tech Theatre 1-4 in High School.
